The SpiritLed Life Christianity and the Internal Family System Mary K Steege Richard C Schwartz PhD 9781453619117 Books

The Spirit-led Life is the story of one woman kicking and screaming her way to grace and spiritual maturity, particularly as it comes through the psycho-spiritual model of therapy known as Internal Family Systems. In the company of such characters as the Coyote Christ and Holy Canary, Mary Steege offers a theologically astute and spiritually sound look at the parallels between Christianity and the Internal Family Systems model. Humorous and poignant, this book points us toward our own experience of divine presence and the possibility of healing. It includes interviews on spirituality with Richard C. Schwartz, developer of the model.

As an IFS therapist, who has walked this journey myself and with others, this book is a luscious gift for the mind, the heart and the spirit and is entertaining to boot. Mary Steege writes in the vein of Ann Lamott, giving generously and humbly of her own inner and external experiences to tie together the theory of IFS with real life examples. Kind of like the stories in the Bible when you think about it, theology given flesh and bone through the parables and stories of Jesus and the disciples.IFS as a psychological model is already an outstanding modality for healing, and is equally applicable for people of all faiths, or no spiritual inclination. For those who choose to take it as a spiritual experience, it is user-friendly. And if they have a sense of personal connection to Jesus and the Holy Spirit, and awareness of the challenges to grow in faith, Mary delivers a rich feast of stories illustrating such experiences. She does this by using the Internal Family Systems theory to deepen the psychological understanding of how we acquire our baggage, how it affects our spiritual life, and how we can use these insights to open ourselves to spiritual healing. Thank you Mary!

The SpiritLed Life Christianity and the Internal Family System Mary K Steege Richard C Schwartz PhD 9781453619117 Books Reviews
Wonderful clear and concise writing. I happen to be a client of Mary's and have experienced the wonderful sensitivity she has as a therapist. She describes the quality of Self in the book and always points it out in me before we start our sessions. This book has helped me understand the Self better. Mary understands that the Self is spiritual and deeply connected to intimacy. We must recognize this quality first to then lovingly help our separated psychological parts integrate with the rest of our soul or psyche. In the book Mary uses the word attunement. She is attuned to the cosmos and connected to the Divine that exists in all of us. She relates to her humanness so you can then feel and identify with the love she has for others and find your own humanness and intimacy. Read the book once and it is great- read it several times and keep uncovering deeper insights. Thanks Mary for sharing your heart with us.
In a loving, heart-felt and insightful manner, Mary Steege helps us to understand IFS as a system that can work for us all. She combines psychology and theology in a way that makes sense and she does so in an informal, non-threatening, non-academic way that made me want to continue reading and understanding. At times I laughed out loud. At other times I said, "That's me!" And at still other times, I realized that my "Self", my "Soul" needs to do much more work. At no time did I feel criticized or demeaned or mis-understood. Rather, I felt encouraged and moved to work on all of my parts. This book is a great read and a great help! I will keep it close by to refer to it over and over again for new insights.
This book is designed to show how the IFS model of therapy fits into Christianity. The premise of the book is very good, and gives the reader a great deal to think about. The author does not always explain clearly the tenets of IFS therapy. If you are already familiar with both IFS and Christianity you will probably understand the book. If you aren't, you will probably struggle to understand what you have read. Overall, it was worth the read.
This (IFS+God) is my new path to wholeness and a big "leg up" into needed understanding, empathy, and deliverance. Delightfully humorous, honest, deep - WONDERFUL!
This book is an excellent resource for those interested in a Christian viewpoint of Internal Family Systems (IFS). It clearly details and explains how Christian beliefs are embraced and supported by IFS. As a Pastoral Counselor and a mental health counselor I found this book to be an excellent resource for those interested in using Internal Family Systems within a Christian frame of reference.
This book is not a primer on Family Systems but you can learn a lot about FS by reading it. It is a humorous, thoughtful, first person account of how a Christian came to terms with the processes and how it took her to another level of Christian insight and experience. I haven't read the entire book but what I have read has already caused me to shift my focus and create new paradigms of understanding. It is a fun but purposeful and meaningful read.
Quite literally the BEST book I have ever read. Next to the Bible. This book has affirmed my thinking and has allowed me to enter into a conversation with a book and an approach that is broad sweeping and mind blowingly simple. Thank you for this amazing gift Ms. Steege.
